Thank You Gawler Hospital

Collecting a placenta for encapsulation from Gawler Hospital

My experience with Gawler Hospital

Gawler is currently about a 35 minute drive from me.  If you are looking for a doula to support you during birth or to get your placenta encapulated, I'd love to work with you.

As a Placenta Services Specialist

99% of the time, Gawler has been a fantastic hospital to work with when collecting a client's placenta.  There is easy parking out the front of the hospital for me, a short walk through the hospital to the Maternity Ward and it's okay for me to see you outside of visiting hours.

The last couple of times I have collected a placenta from Gawler, it's been a refreshing chance to have a chat with the midwives on duty who stop to ask me questions about "this whole placenta encapsulation thing"!

It is the policy of Gawler Health Service to keep your placenta for a week in a fridge with all the other placentas birthed there unless the hospital deems it necessary to be sent for histopathology.  For this reason it is important that you are clear with the hospital at all times that you will be taking your placenta home (they can't keep it or test it without your permission) and with the exception of one staff member, none of my clients have had a problem!

I've worked with a number of clients from Freeling, Hewett, Willaston, Balaklava and surrounding areas who have chosen to birth at Gawler and have their placenta encapsulated.

Placenta Capsules - The Top of Your List

27/1/2016

I have used the capsules for my last two births and wish that I knew about it for my first two. The experience was so much more enjoyable because I felt better in myself using the capsules. I felt alive (so to speak) I wasn't tired and was able to function like a normal human being. I would thoroughly recommend this to anyone, I wasn't lucky enough for it to have any impact on milk supply and I have struggled with all four with supply issues. I know that the initial outlay may seem like a lot when you have all of the other stuff you need for a baby but this should be on the top to make your time easier and feel better as they grow so quickly so you want to enjoy every single bit!

Placenta Encapsulation - A Professor's Opinion

22/1/2016

Professor Claire Roberts speaks about placenta encapsulation | www.elementalbeginnings.netProfessor Claire Roberts. Image Credit: University of Adelaide
I was listening to a recorded interview with Professor Claire Roberts from the School of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Adelaide talk about her opinion of placenta encapsulation.  Professor Roberts specialises in the study of placentas.

Below are a few quotes I thought were quite interesting.  It was a very balanced interview and I encourage you to have a listen - the whole interview is just over 11 minutes and was recorded last year.

Compared to either blood, so the mother's blood or the baby's blood that is accessed from the umbilical cord after delivery, and also breast milk, the placenta is actually much much higher in a lot of minerals like calcium, like iron, zinc and other minerals than those sources.
I certainly wouldn't think its a bad idea to eat your placenta because placentas are full of nutrients. Quote by Professor Claire Roberts
Any toxins that might be present in the placenta have come from the mother's own blood.  So that means whatever toxins she's exposed to could be accumulating in the placenta so she's already been exposed to that, so you might say that having placenta pills is giving more back to the woman.  But really, they came from her so it's not like there's any other exogenous source.  I wouldn't be too concerned about that [toxins] if you're eating your own unless you're a woman who perhaps lives next to a lead smelter or something like that.

9  Celebrities Who Ate Their Placenta

14/1/2016

Are celebrities who consume their placenta helping to make the practice more popular?

They certainly generate more inquiries for me when it hits social media.  Let's take a look at some famous women who have practiced placentophagy and what they thought of it.

At around $200-$300 it might be an affordable way to keep up with the Kardashians!

Who's done it?

Holly Madison from Girls Next Door said "This might sound gross, but I’m totally planning on having my placenta turned into pills I can take after giving birth. I heard it helps women recover faster and I want to recover as quickly as I can!"

Gaby Hoffman consumed her placenta in smoothies "“I made smoothies out of it for three weeks. I had a home birth, so my midwife and my doula took it and cut it up into 20 pieces and froze it, and every day, I put it in a blender with strawberries and blueberries and guava juice and a banana, and I drank that shit up.”  She was also noted as saying it does a girl good and boosted her energy and milk supply.

Alicia Silverstone's husband obviously noted a difference in his wife when she was taking them "I've got to the point that my husband said, 'Did you have your happy pills today?'" Silverstone said on Live! with Kelly and Michael. "And I was really sad when they were gone. It really helped me."

"Yummy...PLACENTA pills! No joke...I will be sad when my placenta pills run out. They are life changing! #benefits #lookitup!"  wrote Kourtney Kardashian on her Instagram account

Natasha Hamilton from Atomic Kitten who also had a homebirth "It was something that my midwife told me about placenta encapsulation. Someone takes it away, dehydrates it and adds some Chinese herbs. It is put in capsules so you can take between three and six a day. It's to help bring in your milk supply and I was going to be breastfeeding anyway so I thought, "Well, fantastic". It can also help against post-natal depression. And for me, that’s something I had in the past and it was a no-brainer to take it.
It had absolutely no taste whatsoever. As I say, it was in a little capsule. I took it with water. And obviously, depending on the size of the placenta, you only get so many."

Mayim Bialik talks about ingesting your placenta on her blog stating "Human beings are the only mammals that have chosen to not routinely ingest their placenta, which is consumed by every other mammal for its protein and iron-rich properties that are critical in helping the mother’s body recuperate after giving birth. End of story."

Kim Kardashian "I had great results and felt so energised and didn’t have any signs of depression!” she gushed. “I definitely had to do it again. Every time I take a pill, I feel a surge of energy and feel really healthy and good. I totally recommend it for anyone considering it!"

January Jones "It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas. It’s not witch-crafty or anything! I suggest it to all moms!"

Teen Mom's Kailyn Lowry posted pics up on her Instagram and tweeted "For those wondering, I'm feeling pretty good so far taking my placenta pills." Lowry tweeted the next day. "No negative side effects!"

I'd love to know your opinion.  Do you think placentophagy has become more popular because people want to copy celebrities or do they help bring awareness about this option for a more positive postpartum?
